Dr. Abby Hoxsey
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW
I believe healing and change occur in the context of a safe therapeutic relationship, and I prioritize cultivating a space where clients feel seen, heard, and included. I am passionate about envisioning and co-creating a psychotherapy accessible to all individuals and communities, particularly those who have historically been excluded from mental health theories and practices (e.g., LGBTQIA+; BIPOC communities).
With specialization in adult and adolescent anxiety, trauma, mood disorders, relational and couples’ concerns, grief, family conflict, and addiction, I strive to help clients meet their goals while reconnecting to their strengths, values, and innate resilience. I also often work with clients navigating challenging life transitions including college or work changes, relocation/moving to a different city/state, marriage, retirement, and educational challenges, and am committed to supporting my clients through these major life shifts. In the fields of performance and sport psychology, common areas I work with athletes include performance anxiety, injury recovery, and managing stress to support their performance and emotional wellbeing.
My therapeutic orientation is first and foremost humanistic, collaborative, and client-centered: while I have training and expertise in therapeutic interventions and theories, my clients are the experts on their lives and experiences. I integrate an intentional connection between relational, psychodynamic theories and third-wave cognitive approaches—facilitating, for example, a mindful awareness of thoughts, emotions, and sensations in the here-and-now while remaining curious about how past relational and formative experiences contribute to present day functioning.
I received my PhD in Counseling Psychology from Purdue University and completed my pre-doctoral internship at the Brattleboro Retreat in southern Vermont. I have received training and supervision in acute inpatient settings, addiction treatment, community mental health, university counseling, and a state hospital system. I have been and continue to be involved in research on equity and inclusivity in education and psychology and have taught courses at the university level.
