Dr. Peter Gu

POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW

My therapeutic approach is rooted in the notion that our relationships with other people shape who we are and how we feel, and that these interactions, many of which are developed early in our life, influence how we view ourselves and connect with others. In childhood, these interaction patterns and ways of viewing ourselves and other individuals were likely helpful for attaining our needs, navigating difficult barriers, and/or protecting ourselves from hurtful relationships. Often as adults we are not fully aware of the impact of our past patterns, and they can become our default approach to relationships, affecting our ability to cope with life stressors and form relationships and connections in the ways that are important to us.

As your therapist, it is my goal to create a safe, warm, and open environment to gain insight into your patterns and ways of coping and have the chance to try new ways of being and viewing yourself. My work with clients often focuses on relationships, current stressors, family and cultural values, and coping skills.  By focusing on these areas, you will be able to gain insight and self-awareness, become more aligned with your values and who you are. My therapeutic approach is rooted in interpersonal process theory while integrating aspects of acceptance and commitment theory, cognitive-behavioral therapy, emotion focused therapy, and developmental theories such as Attachment Theory.

I specialize in providing therapy to clients facing issues with their family or other relationships; facing anxiety or depression; addiction (e.g., substance use, gaming, internet); those experiencing discrimination or navigating social or cultural difficulties around identity; or those recovering from trauma (e.g., childhood abuse or neglect, relationship trauma, etc.). I often work with clients experiencing difficult life transitions such as, college or education changes or challenges; employment transitions; and moves and relocation. I also have specialized training in conducting couples counseling.

I have worked with clients from a variety of diverse backgrounds in several different settings and have had the privilege of being a part of their journey in overcoming challenges; deepening understanding of themselves; creating real, meaningful relationships; and creating change in their lives. I am honored to share in this process of change with clients and serve this community.
