Martha McDermott
Therapy is not about simply taking away pain, but building a life that you want to live. I work with individuals to foster a strong relationship where we can partner together on wherever this journey takes them and do what matters.
My areas of passion include working with clients experiencing anxiety, mood disorders, relationship issues, co-occurring concerns, and difficulty coping with life transitions (e.g., changes with work, retirement, onset of disability.) I also often work with people navigating concerns related to stress and burnout. I enjoy working with young adults navigating life transitions including college, employment, and identity development. I am passionate about providing LGTBQ+ affirming therapy. As a musician, I have personal and professional experience in the field of performance psychology and enjoy working with musicians and athletes who are experiencing struggles related to performance.
My approach to therapy is person centered and incorporates feminist/multicultural and acceptance and commitment therapy principles. I have training in co-occurring mental health and addiction-related concerns. I have eight years of experience working in community mental health settings including residential treatment, homeless services, and community-based case management services in Hennepin County. Much of my work has been with clients experiencing Severe and Persistent Mental Illness including Bipolar and Schizophrenia spectrum disorders, which has provided me an extensive understanding of the mental health continuum of care, as well as the landscape of disability service and the challenges navigating this system. These experiences have fostered an appreciation for the resilience we all have as humans through the challenges and successes we experience in life.
